KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Joanna M. Schmit, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Oncology)

Joanna Schmit earned her DVM at the University of Minnesota and completed her rotating internship, clinical trials internship, Master’s degree and oncology residency at the University of Illinois. After completing her residency and board certification, she worked in private practice for 10 years in both corporate and privately owned practices. In addition to busy clinical practice, she has held hospital leadership roles, designed chemotherapy facilities for construction, and lectured on topics that include cancer diagnostics, treatment, USP 800 and chemo safety. Dr. Schmit returned to the University of Illinois in 2023 to support and expand the clinical trials team, where she currently oversees nearly twenty open trials. She enjoys the fast pace and discovery that trials bring to the oncology world. Her goal in providing continuing education and consulting with referring veterinarians is to make oncology straightforward and accessible to all.
In her free time, Dr. Schmit loves being outdoors and enjoys hiking, kayaking and camping. She loves to travel and often plans trips that incorporate her love of live music. Her favorite places on Earth are the Serengeti, Scotland and Yellowstone. At home, she supplies friends with a glut of produce from her gardening efforts and spends quality time hiking, then lounging with her sidekick, a couch potato pitty named Boone.
Rohit Bhargava, PhD
Rohit serves as the Director of the Cancer Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois), one of the university-wide institutes at Illinois. His primary academic appointment is in the Department of Bioengineering with joint appointments in several engineering departments and chemistry as well as in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Rohit Bhargava’s research focuses on the development of chemical imaging technologies and applying them to enable digital molecular pathology for cancer research and patient care. Traditionally, cancer has been diagnosed by its shape and size. Rohit’s group aims to diagnose cancer by its underlying molecular characteristics, using fundamental advances in chemical imaging and applications of modern machine learning, ultimately allowing for better treatment of patients.
